Help & tips
How to compress a video
- Select the videos you want to reduce.
- Choose a quality preset and review the output options.
- Compress the files and compare the size and playback quality.
Example use cases
- Make a short clip smaller for easy sharing.
Limitations to consider
- Lower bitrates generally reduce image quality.
Questions and practical tips
Does a smaller video always have the same quality?
No. Stronger lossy compression trades visual detail for size. Check motion, small text and dark areas when comparing outputs.
Why is the reduction smaller than expected?
A source may already be highly compressed. The achievable reduction depends on the source, output settings and codec, so a preset cannot guarantee a fixed final size.
When is compression faster?
For WebM output, compatible browsers can encode VP9 directly; otherwise FileMorning uses FFmpeg. Other containers currently use FFmpeg. Results depend on your device and the source.
Why might the original be returned?
When Same as source and Keep original if larger are selected, the original file is returned if the compression is larger. An explicit WebM output always remains WebM.
Processing and file safety
This tool processes files in your browser. Loading the page, libraries or AI models can still require network connections. Keep a copy of your original files and check the downloaded result before deleting them. Large files may require more memory and processing time than your device can provide.
